The FDA making the recommendation about the cough/cold for children under 6 y/o not being safe/efficacious has really put us pharmacists in a tough spot though! We either, against the legal advice of our company and the FDA's beliefs dose what we're used to dosing, or we don't. The majority of us ask, "what age?" then follow up with, I'm sorry but you'll have to see your doctor. What's a disaster is that the 1/2 those kids get guesstimate doses from parents who don't want to/have time to take their kids to to the doctor. And the other half of the kids end up in the ER just to get an RX for APAP or Q-Tussin.

you are so lucky they all had the last name---that does not happen often...5 out of 6 of them usually have different names, and when you ask them to spell the first name you get a nasty look, because Tyson is usually spelled like..tyyonson! Like I would know that...maybe I need a crystal ball!

I think it's fear. People don't realize how tough humans are. Television reinforces this fear with barrages of ads recommending immediate medical attention for just about everything.

Of course, I have a biased opinion, since my generation suffered every form of measles, chicken pox, mumps and even polio. Colds and the flu were so far under the radar, the thought of involving professionals was beyond reason.

It was a common last name, like Smith. We have at least a dozen or so patients with this particular last name on a daily basis, so yeah. It was kind of interesting (and sad) to see that they were actually related.

The ER is not a clinic.

I just don't understand why everyone runs there kids to the doctor for 3 days of cough. Let alone the ER. Kids get coughs. Get over it, they will. Don't come running to your doctor expecting an instant cure. And no, I'm not giving you antibiotics for a viral infection - it will not work.

This is one thing my ex-husband and I argued over last year. The kids got colds. Coughing, stuffy/runny noses, fevers. The usual.

He wanted me to take them to the doctor. I refused. I kept them at home, fed them well, gave them lots of tissues and ibuprofen when their temps spiked.

He was unsatisfied with the medicine I gave them. Sent over children's cough & cold syrup. I called him up. "You realize what you sent over here is EXACTLY the stuff the FDA has recommended against using in children five and under?" Him: "..."
