I'd be surprised if FOCA could stand up to legal challenge. The only part I agree with is that pharmacists in commercial pharmacies shouldn't be allowed to refuse to dispense products that are against their religious beliefs. Let them go to work for an employer that supports that supports their thinking.

We had our Middle Daughter at a Catholic hospital because I didn't know (although my paternalistic OB-GYN did) they wouldn't allow me to get my tubes tied after delivery.

So now we have three children (of course, we love them all). The third was delivered at a Methodist hospital, where I was allowed to get my tubes tied.

In the ER, we're allowed to treat minors without parental consent in the case of an obvious emergency where obtaining parental consent would jeopardize the health of the child and if a minor comes in seeking pregnancy testing/counseling or help with a pregnancy problem. The point of the latter law is to keep teens from going through pregnancy without seeking prenatal care to PRESERVE THE HEALTH OF THE MOTHER AND BABY.

When you're performing an elective abortion, you are actively terminating the life of the baby, not doing anything to preserve its life; ergo, it should be a procedure which requires parental knowledge and/or assent. A kid may, for instance, think that their mom would hate them for getting pregnant so they're going to get an abortion when, in fact, the parent would be supportive of the child keeping the baby and willing to help.

I'm an atheist BTW, too, so my argument is based on logic and decency, not religion. Also, a religious-based hospital should not have to provide an elective procedure of any sort, especially one that violates the its mission as a Christian organization.

The Freedom of Choice Act. Basically negating any and all state laws regarding the regulation of abortion -- like parental notification for minors, informed consent, etc. i t would also require religiously affiliated hospitals to perform abortions, and would not allow doctors to refuse to perform them.

Several Catholic hospitals are toying with the ideas of closing down altogether, rather than acquiesce to FOCA.

After 8 years of Bush, I'm SO relieved and happy about this election!

I don't think many conservatives crossed over; I think the wingnuts stayed home, and the true conservative vote wasn't enough without the wingnuts. The stuff I read said Republican turnout was lower in this election than in previous elections and anecdotal evidence seems to support that claim. I live in Georgia, so some of my friends are wingnuts (in a state like Georgia, you can't afford to cross off potential friends just because of their politics or you'll soon find you don't have any friends). While they would rather be poked in the eye with a sharp stick than vote for Obama, they also couldn't bring themselves to vote for McCain. So the rightest of the right wing just didn't participate.

Don't worry too much. I didn't think the republic would survive Reagan, but the only real damage he did was to the national debt. (That and the psychological damage of fixing in people's minds the idea that all government is terrible. Indeed, some government is. If you find yourself with terrible government, you need to do something about it. I voted against Bush, for instance.) I simply couldn't believe that Bush was re-elected, and it's still not entirely clear the country will survive him, but I believe it will. A lot of things may happen under Obama that you don't care for, but it's unlikely that any of them will substantially change the way you live. So relax, kick back and wait for a social issue that will bring the wingnuts back into the fold.

Seaspray, don't forget John Kennedy was inexperienced when he was elected, too (if you didn't like Kennedy, that was a bad example). I believe he won popular support because he inspired people, much as Obama has.

I've had enough political arguments over the last two years to last a lifetime, so I don't really want to get into another (unless someone like jedi master daryl wants to spread some more disinformation), especially since the decision has already been made.

Let's try to take the "watchful waiting" approach and hope he proves to be a good leader. He's certainly starting with a lot on his plate, so it won't be long before we learn whether he's up to the job.

Joints...I just don't get how a conservative could cross over like that for a candidate that is the antithesis of what conservatives stand for. Even if they were mad at McCain for the times he wasn't partisan and even if they had reservations about Palin and if they decided to exact revenge by voting democratic or staying home... they did not put their country first with their votes by allowing it to go into the hands of people who will in all probability take the country in a direction they will not like.

I do not respect most journalists I previously admired now. They did not do their jobs! We have the least vetted president elect ever voted into office and I cringed when I heard about him being briefed yesterday. Somehow the image of him being friends with nefarious people and having this power ...well it just does not seem logical that this could be happening.

I do believe Palin at least had more experience with executive decisions and demonstrated she had a strong character and is able to buck the tide... even within her own party.

Marcia - I have a post up about questioning Obama's birth. $ people sent the youtube too me via e-mail..although I don't know why as they were all voting Obama. It bothered me to hear about the lawsuit and I genuinely wanted to know about it.

Whether that is true or not... There is much we do not know about this man... and THAT is making me crazy.

As a matter of fact... I would not be taking it as hard if it weren't for the shady, manipulative way the press handled things and his questionable background and the fact that ... Great comments today! I loved Sarah, tolerated McCain, fear Obama, and consider Biden brain dead (pickled, doubtlessly). McCain/Palin lost because the Republicans didn't vote. By the numbers, Obama got Kerry's 2004votes plus a few more of the 18-24 and women, and McCain fell almost 10 million below Bush in 2004 due to low republican turnout. Obama outspent 6-1 with a large number of illegal donations.

I didn't see either speech; I was busy with other tasks.
