OK, one of my nurses would have paid to see you take that thing out. Looks more like some kind of larva to me, though. You sure it wasn't moving?

IT'S ALIIVE! But seriously, that's freaking nasty. And huge. How could someone let it get that large? The old "maybe it'll go away on it's own" logic? =)

Wow, I bet that was really gratifying (to you and to him/her). Was this someone with hygeine issues, or did s/he just not notice it, or what? Hope they're careful, or they'll get a hematoma under there...awesome.

Good God, they'll be packing that thing with gauze for a year till it heals.....

And I hope for the patient's sake that it wasn't near the er...uh...private area---and that it was "reachable". Because otherwise, a family member will have to help pack it and secure the dressing every day--HEH!

(Okay, okay, I have a morbid sense of humor.)

Looks hard. Were you able to use the minimal excision technique?

Yikes! Were they waiting for it to grow legs and crawl away or something? How could they not have known it was there?

Seb. cysts never fail to gross me out. Rates worse than sputum. That looks huge, and the fact that you got so much out in one piece. Good links, thanks.

OK .... Where the HELL was it???

It was on the buttock. And it was more of a "moderate" excision technique. I tried to make a small incision and squeeze it out, but I ended up extending the incision a bit (maybe 2cm total) and using a sharp dissection technique with scissors around the edges to free it up. Then with a little squeezing it came out like an alien.

Ahah! So it wasn't in a "reachable" spot. Pity the family member who'll have to do that daily dressing change.....

Thank Goodness that wasn't a bartholin's cyst. Yowza! Almost looks like you would need general anesthesia to take that sucker out!

ps. tag, got a meme for you by way of 'make mine trauma', play if you like or your face will freeze and you will get a huge sebaceous cyst.

The rules:
1. Post these rules before you give your facts.
2. List 8 random facts about yourself.
3. At the end of your post, choose (tag) 8 people and list their names, linking to them.
4. Leave a comment on their blog, letting them know they've been tagged.

Unfortunatly my partner at work didn't think the same, according to him, "ggrrrrooooooossssss." I guess I shouldn't have showed him as he was eating a brisket sandwhich. :)

"It came out like an alien." HAHA!

I had one of them damn things on the middle of my back. It was small at first. I kept going for my yearly physical and the doc kept saying leave it alone. Finally after about 4 years, it was about the size of half a golfball on the outside and it bothered me to lay on it. So I said screw the doc and went to a surgeon and asked him to remove it. When he mdae the cut the thing damn near flew across the room from the size and pressure of it under my skin. When he finally got it all out, it was more like the size of a tennis ball. It damn sure felt good to have it gone too. The lab report that came back on it said it was a sebaceous cyst but it also said there was some foreign substance at the center that was small and hard like a rock or something. If you ever get one of these and the doc says leave it alone, I recommend getting another opinion. I suffered for years with that darn thing and it felt great to have it gone. Now I just have about a 2-1/2 scar in my back and its dented in a little where the thing used to be. The surgeon removed it under local anesthesia too. I did not feel a thing but that damn thing stunk like a dead animal that had been rotting in the sun for a week. I almost threw up from the smell. I don't know how the doc and the nurse could stand it. That was a few decades ago and I've never had another one. I wonder if I got a rock or piece of metal in my back and it caused this thing to grown around it?

Or the patient, like my husband, thinks it isn't bothersome and won't let a family member look at it (or, I confess, express it).

Like assrot,I had a largeand nasty cyst develop on my left trapezius muscle- just at a point where itwas unreachable. First noticed the lump when I arrived in Iraq. Medic and the docs said it was just a "little zit" that wou d probably drain by itself. But, it grew and grew.and the heat, th egeneral filth, and the gear we had to wear at all times, and the inability to take a good, hot shower for over 16 months didnt help the situation either. B ythe time my deployment was over and I was back home, the "little zit" had developed into a almost fist sized lump, very hard, and filled with blood, pus, sebum and keratin, plus a massive comedone!!!
Went to a surgeon a day after I got home, and was able totake a good, long shower, and he made an incision, like Scalpel did with his patient, and drained out all the foul material, and then dug out a hard comedone that was rather large!!! It was about golf-ball sized, and the surgeon said that blood/pus/sebum mix might have measured about 80 to 100cc.
But, Ima glad that I survived my deployment in Al-Anbar province with onlya big zit on myback. Some of my comrades-in-arms werentas lucky. I am sure they would have given anytihng to be able to come home with only a big zit on their back.

Hi everyone,
I have one growing on the back of my neck.. and it is not my first one. Have had two others removed, one was on my shoulder and another on my butt. They were not as big as the one I have on my neck.. both produced scars..
I went to see my surgeon for the one growing on my neck a few months ago. He told me to forget about it.. and if he removed it I would have a scar about 3 inches on my neck. Well 8 months later it is the size of a golfball and very hard.. I am on a waiting list and here in Canada that could be a year since it is just a cyst.. I will keep you posted..

Following up my post of 3/26/2008 11:37:00 PM.

Upon reflection, perhaps the patient had no medical insurance nor regular physician. That would explain the visit to the ER.
