Baby Face, MD

Ten out of Ten has a great post about the drawbacks of being a young physician (or at least looking like one). I used to get irritated with those sorts of patient comments too, but after about the thousandth time I guess I got used to it.

"How long have you been a doctor?"

- "Hmmmm.... about 6 weeks now."

"You don't look old enough to be a doctor."

- "It's just good clean living, ma'am."

"Have you done this before?"

- "Well, I've seen it done a couple of times. Just bear with me."

"Where did you go to medical school?"
- "Aruba. Those American schools are WAY too competitive."

"What's your specialty going to be?"

- "This is my specialty. Fixing people."

When asked how long I had been a doctor, I would muse a moment and then pointedly look at my watch.

And my standard response to have you done this before is "No, but I saw it in a cartoon and I'm pretty sure I can pull it off."

I work with a constantly changing collection of floaters and new ER residents, and when someone asked which one was Dr Soandso and I replied "he's the one who looks like Doogie Howser" I was immediately understood. Funny, when I asked about another doctor and they said he's the one all the females think is attractive, it really didn't help a lot.

As far as the "have you done it before ?" thing, if an apprehensive patient compliments me on my technique after a procedure they were apprehensive about, sometimes I tell them that they're letting me do it on people again.

I look about 10 years younger than my real age. At least I used to. Upon hearing my real age, people used to say, no way, I thought you were my age! (ie 10 years younger). Now, even though people my same age think I am younger, when my age is revealed to most they just sit there and look at me without comment. I miss the old days........

When my wife needed brain surgery in walked a Doctor that looked so young that in my mine I was saying "oh helllllllllllll no, I'm not letting Doogie Howser work on my wife."

But as I sat there and listened to everything he had to say I slowly changed my mind.

Turns out that during the surgery her aneurysm burst and He saved her on the table.

All the nurses told me that we were lucky that it was HIM doing the surgery.

We agreed. So much so that we just had "Doc Doogie" due my wife's second brain surgery.

I've learned my lesson and it turns out He is a few years older than me (I'm 43) and just looks 25.

Peace,

Dave
