(Real) Nurses Rock
I'm only as good as the nurses I am working with.
Outstanding nurses make even the most difficult shifts run smoothly. It's amazing to watch, really. They not only can tell when their patients are "sick," initiate treatment before I am even aware of the patient, keep track of numerous medications and interventions, know the plan of care and the updated vital signs on their patients, write detailed and appropriate notes, identify many problems before I do, catch my mistakes, make appropriate suggestions, encourage appropriate dispositions, and accomplish all of the "little things" that make a patient's stay more comforting, safe, and efficient. Sometimes all they really need is my signature. I disagree with them at my peril.
I don't care if a nurse wears an "unapproved" T-shirt or holiday socks, if she chooses to display tattoos or piercings, or if he speaks a little too bluntly to the customers. I only care that the nurse is a good nurse. All of us in the trenches know who the good nurses are. Cut them some slack. Give them a raise. But don't chase them away for silly reasons like that. Looking like a good nurse or toeing the line like a good nurse doesn't make one a good nurse.
They can work anywhere, in any nursing situation. They don't have to find a niche. You can plug them into any ER, ICU, recovery room, or disaster scene and they will be outstanding nurses wherever they go. In fact, if you piss them off, they are likely to leave for greener pastures. They don't have to take any grief from busybody pencil-pushers. They can work anywhere. Their excellence ensures that they will prosper, as long as we maintain a relatively free market.
Because real nurses ROCK. You know who you are. And so do we.

Hey scalpel--
Thanks for that. I've been reading all the craziness going on (I know you know what I'm talking about), and just wanted to let you know that I think YOU rock!
I've read some of the venting -- everyone needs to at one time or another - and accepting it as just that.
THIS, on the other hand, is very much appreciated. And I'm glad I work with physicians and NNPs who know who the real nurses are too. Else I'd be heading for those greener pastures you mention.
Thanks for being in our corner. You rock.
Do you still want that coffee?
I agree completely. I try hard to remember to let the ones I work with know they are appreciated. I think they do, I hope they do know how apprciated they are. (this from a female surgeon)
G.D. right fucking on dude! a paperwork nurse almost caused a real nurse's head to explode today as we were stabilizing a head trauma patient. WTF? i think i'm going to borrow your 'real nurses rock' line a few times because they do. props.
I come from a family of nurses (I got the off gene and went into business/law) and want to thank you. The utmost respect should be given to nurses. Can you imagine if you didnt have them....**shudder***
from a soon-to-be third year ED resident, I wholeheartedly agree!
Thank you, Scalpel---you have no idea how much that type of comment from a doctor means to nurses. It means A LOT. Sometimes nurses (many of us who have low self esteem) think that doctors only care about the opinions of other doctors, but you have restored our belief that many doctors do care about nurses' opinions and feelings.
Your post comforted me even more because it came on the heels of an event which hurt me about just this topic (about how doctors view nurses).
I comented (strongly, as I have been known to do) on Panda's site, disagreeing with something--and I wrote a sentence about not wanting to be forced to "move to fucking Dallas" to get insurance.
He deleted my comment with the words: "Nobody gets to tell anybody to Shut the Fuck Up on this blog."
I don't mind my comment being deleted, but his stated reason was not correct. I had told nobody to "shut the fuck up". I was hurt and disappointed that my words were not read correctly and then lied about. And I hate that anybody would think that from his note.
Anyway, thank you Scalpel.
Oops, and I stand corrected. Panda emailed me and showed me my error.
I forgot that during my comment rant on Panda's site, I accidentally DID tell him to shut the fuck up about poor, uninsured people while suggesting he move to Beverly Hills to avoid them.
I'm truly sorry---but the biker chick in me gets carried away sometimes. And I truly forgot, and so I am apologizing to him and everybody else here for telling an untruth.
That said, I will also have to admit that, in a subsequent private email, I re-told "the phrase" to him for real. This time because it is the biker chick's creed to NOT allow a rude man to talk to her sarcastically without making some sort of rebuttal.
(And yes...I'm hot tempered. Must be the added bonus of French/Irish blood...)
Over here I have only met ONE good nurse. Butshe was really an angel. She never hurt my hand, and always asked me if I was in pain, and she had a very sweet smile that made me feel I was really taken care for. I believe the role of nurses is very important in a hospital, because they can be more close to the patients and can really make them feel comfortable. They can make the difference, especially if a doctor has a work overload and has to run all around taking care of many different people.
Thank you.

thanks. Thanks very much.
Yes, I'm awesome!
;)
Thanks Doc. I needed that!
Scalpel, you have no idea how much your comment means to me. I don't like our new doc, and my boss is beating me up in order to cover the new doc's cluster-f**ks. You put a smile on an old gals face.
Thank you.
Yay!! We rock!!
Thanks Scalpel, it means a lot :o)
Dr Crippen, you sanctimonious old so-and-so, you should not only read this, you should print it out and put it on your desk, right in front of your eyes so you don't forget it!
Thanks, I needed this today! : )
Somewhere I read that you are supposed to get a pizza...

OMG I can't believe that!
Word -- that's why I work the 7p to 7a at my Pit instead of the other options - my best nurses are nighthawks too... all the Clipboard Queens work day shift.
Scalpel - that was a really nice thing to say and obviously it meant a lot to the nurses here. Any one of these nurses would probably jump through hoops for you just to bring you your coffee and pizza. I would. Just because I would appreciate you too. :)
People should take the time to recognize the good qualities in the others around them and tell them once in awhile.
"Their excellence ensures that they will prosper, as long as we maintain a relatively free market."
Scalpel - what did you mean by that last line? Were you inferring that we shouldn't have socialized medicine? I had always heard it was a bad system.
I saw sicko last night and admit it moved me to put up my most recent post.
I am not a fan of Michael Moore - at all. His beliefs are the antithesis of my belief system. He has been known to misrepresent the facts - I know.
We all know America is in a health care crisis, no one seems to have the answers.
He painted the Canadians, British, French and Cubans as having utopian health care systems. I do take issue with the Cuban comparison.
I hope it is alright I linked your May 20 "sicko" post to my comment about Cuba. If not - I will remove it.
I really do wonder if socialized medicine in other countries is a better system???
Thanks Scalpel.
I have worked and do work with some outstanding Docs. Nursing is professional in crisis and we all appreciate your support. We can not do this job without each other. Time to join forces.
Bravo to you for noticing! I wish all doc's would take the time to appreciate the "good" nurses.
Right on -- It is good to see someone such as yourself appreciates the power of a good nurse. Thanks from a Savannah ER Nurse!
Hey Scalpel...
I'm just a lowly EMT and I appreciated this post. Thanks for giving credit to a profession I admire like there's no tomorrow.
Back at ya - smart docs rock!
And smart docs know who to depend on and smart nurses too...Anyway - I just printed out your posting (anonymously of course) to hang up at work!!!
